Research evaluating the impact of the operation of longer semi-trailers (LSTs) on Great Britain’s roads.

The trial is designed to evaluate the impact of LST operations on:

  • efficiency
  • emissions
  • safety

and whether the expected reduction in emissions, due to less journeys, is realised without detrimental effect.

The research explains:

  • by the end of 2017, there were almost 2,000 LSTs on the road, covering 443 million kilometres
  • LST trips have saved in the region of 225,000 to 270,000 heavy goods vehicle journeys, with emission savings of 7%
  • trailers are being operated with an injury rate of one third of the average of the trailers they replace

As outlined, the trial evaluation will next focus on damage-only incidents, the performance of different types of steering axle and the operational requirements needed to maintain good performance.

The research was commissioned by Department for Transport and trials originally started in January 2012.
