Electricity will be increasingly important in supporting delivery of net zero, potentially providing around half of final energy demand as its use for heat and in transport increases.

Understanding the ways in which the system can deliver more electricity whilst producing fewer carbon emissions, and the relative cost of doing so, is central to developing an energy strategy to support delivery of net zero.

This paper sets out the modelling assumptions, methodology and outputs of our analysis of the electricity system in 2050. This analysis helps us to understand the potential impact on system costs of reducing carbon emissions at different levels of demand, using different combinations of generating and storage technologies.
