Details
The national public transport gazetteer (NPTG) provides a topographic database of towns and settlements in the UK. Appropriate naming of towns and places is vital for providing effective place and stop finding in modern on-line journey planners and other passenger information systems. The NPTG XML schema is used to distribute data from the NPTG database to the local administrative areas as well as other public transport information systems such as journey planners.
NPTG consists of:
- a standard for identifying and naming localities
- a database of all the localities points in the UK
- XML schema, both for transferring information about settlements and computer services associated with the program or alternative CSV schema for exchanging information with the database
The NPTG database is maintained by Landmark under contract to the Department of Transport. NPTG data can be edited, viewed and downloaded via user login. The national data is available for download on Data.gov.uk.
