What personal data is collected and how it’s used
Natural England will use the information collected to undertake research, development and evaluation activities to support the Species Conservation Strategies project.
The personal information Natural England processes will include (but is not limited to):
- your name
- contact details – postal and email addresses and telephone number(s)
- information about your business and property and your job title and occupation
For example, it may be used to:
- work in collaboration through your expertise and information
- develop an evidence base on targeted species in your area
Natural England will give details of what personal data is collected and how it’s used when it invites you to take part in the research or evaluation of the project.
The legal basis for processing your personal data
Processing is necessary for the performance of a task carried out in the public interest.
The task is to develop Species Conservation Strategies as delegated by Defra to Natural England under section 109 of The Environment Act 2021.

The processing of your personal data is based on consent. You can withdraw consent at any time by emailing [email protected].
Who Natural England shares your personal data with
Natural England may share the personal data collected under this privacy notice with third parties such as approved contractors, approved consultants and approved partners working on behalf of Natural England for purposes such as:
- for particular research, evidence and development opportunities
- to evaluate the project
Natural England only shares information when necessary and anonymously whenever possible. By providing your personal information you are consenting to us sharing these details with relevant third parties.
Natural England respects your personal privacy when responding to access to information requests. It only shares information when necessary to meet the statutory requirements of the Environmental Information Regulations 2004 and the Freedom of Information Act 2000.
How long Natural England holds personal data
Natural England will keep your personal data for 7 years after the end of the project.
What happens if you do not provide the data requested
Natural England will be unable to gather your views. You will not be able to contribute to the specific goals of the research. The project team will not be able to:
- send you communications about the project or invite you to take part in workshops, surveys or interviews
- take your experience and opinions into account
Use of automated decision-making or profiling
The information you provide is not used for:
- automated decision making (making a decision by automated means without any human involvement)
- profiling (automated processing of personal data to evaluate certain things about an individual)
Transfer of data outside of the UK
Natural England will only transfer your data to another country that is deemed adequate for data protection purposes.
