This publication offers guidance on carrying out the statutory duties of an NHS foundation trust governor.

NHS foundation trust governors are the direct representatives of local communities. They challenge the board of directors and hold the non-executive directors to account for the performance of the board.

This guide was first published by Monitor in October 2009. This updated version reflects the new roles and responsibilities of governors as set out in the Health and Social Care Act 2012.
