This document outlines the projects granted under the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 during 2016 with a primary purpose of translational applied research - human gastrointestinal disorders including liver.

The following projects were granted:

  • liver regeneration and repair (liver, regeneration, cirrhosis, cancer)

  • the role of mitochondria in regulating gut mucosal homeostasis (inflammation, gut mucosa, epithelial biology, IBD)

  • immune regulation at mucosal and barrier surfaces (immunology, microbiota, gut)

  • obesity induced liver and pancreatic disease (obesity, nervous system, liver regeneration, pancreas, perinatal programming)

  • mechanisms underlying chronic liver disease (obesity, nervous system, liver regeneration, pancreas, perinatal programming)

  • towards new anti-obesity drugs (obesity, drugs)

  • gut development, homeostasis and disease (peritoneal adhesions, hirschsprung’s disease, maintenance of the intestinal tissues, enteric nervous system, development of therapies)

  • implantation of biologically derived tissue scaffolds
