Details

This report provides an update on the work Transport for the North (TfN) and the Department for Transport (DfT) are doing to develop the northern transport strategy. It:

  • summarises initial findings of Network Rail’s feasibility work on the Northern Powerhouse rail network, linking Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Sheffield, Newcastle, Hull and Manchester Airport
  • summarises initial findings of the Trans-Pennine tunnel interim report, setting out the case for a link between Manchester and Sheffield
  • provides updates and plans across all the workstreams for freight and logistics, strategic local and international connectivity
  • sets out what TfN and DfT will produce by the Budget 2016, including:
    • an implementation plan for £150 million investment in smart and integrated travel
    • priorities for the development of road and rail across the north to create the Northern Powerhouse
