Details

The assessment reviews the powers conferred as part of the Wreck Removal Convention Act 2011 which includes:

  • imposing a legal obligation on shipowners to locate, mark and remove, or have removed, wrecks which pose a hazard
  • the ‘polluter pays’ principle making the party responsible for producing pollution, the wrecked vessel owner, liable for paying for damage
  • ensuring that, in most cases, the government is able to recover its full costs

We are required to provide an initial assessment of the act 5 years after Royal Assent.
