Government is on a mission to deliver lightning-fast, reliable gigabit-capable broadband to everyone in the UK. We are on track for one of the fastest rollouts in Europe and for 60% of all households to have access to this game-changing connectivity by the end of the year.
We want to encourage commercial investment and stimulate suppliers to go further into harder-to-reach areas, by using subsidies to extend this activity further.
We are backing Project Gigabit with £5 billion so hard-to-reach communities excluded from commercial plans are not left out of this upgrade to the nation’s digital infrastructure.
Following the publication of the Project Gigabit Phase One Delivery Plan in March 2021, this update to the Plan sets out a proposed procurement pipeline for Phases 1 and 2 with modelled premises numbers, multi-million pound investments and target timelines to reach communities from Northumberland to Cornwall that would otherwise be left behind.
Industry is matching our ambition - since the first update in March, telecoms suppliers have committed to reach 5 million more UK homes and businesses in their commercial plans. Project Gigabit is designed to be responsive to the UK’s thriving telecoms market and the proposed pipeline and contract values will remain dynamic to the developing landscape.
