As a result of the review, a number of new questions were developed and tested.

The 3 stages of development were:

  1. a questionnaire development workshop held jointly by DCMS and TNS-BMRB
  2. cognitive testing of new questions to be included in the adult survey
  3. a face-to-face quantitative pilot conducted in-home to test the final draft of the 2011 to 2012 questionnaire using Computer Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI)

Taking Part is the key evidence source for DCMS and was commissioned primarily to provide a single evidence source on participation in culture and sport. The survey is currently used to measure and inform departmental indicators, inform the development and impact of DCMS policy, and to understand the drivers and barriers of participation in cultural and sporting activities.
