The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government supplements the information on planning decisions that it collects from local planning authorities with statistics on housing permissions provided by a contractor, Glenigan Ltd. Rolling annual totals of numbers of housing units granted permission permissions are routinely included within Table 3 of Planning Applications in England statistical release: the latest version is Planning applications in England October to December 2019.

This ad-hoc publication provides associated information on numbers of residential planning permissions for which permission is estimated to be lapsing between 23 March and 31 March 2021. It is a follow-up to a similar publication of 19 June, which provided estimates up to 30 June 2020.

These figures from Glenigan Ltd are published to give contextual information to users and have not been designated as National Statistics.

Planning permissions are usually granted subject to a statutory general condition under section 91 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990, which limits the duration of the permission. The default time period is 3 years. If a planning permission lapses, a new planning application would have to be submitted for determination by the local planning authority.
