The Government welcomes the European Scrutiny Committee’s Inquiry into the European scrutiny system in the House of Commons. The Government attaches great importance to effective parliamentary scrutiny of European business and this inquiry is an important contribution to that debate. Government is clear that national Parliaments and national Governments are the main sources of democratic legitimacy and accountability in the EU. Our response is the next step in an ongoing dialogue about how to further improve the UK’s scrutiny system so that together Government and Parliament are better able to promote British interests in the EU.
