In 2007, the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN) and the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) successfully collaborated to form an Expert Group to discuss the WHO Growth Standards for children in the UK.

In 2009, the Department of Health asked the Joint SACN/RCPCH Expert Group to reconvene and provide advice on the use of Body Mass Index (BMI) centile thresholds for defining underweight, overweight and obesity in children aged 2 to 18 years in the UK.
