Details

The Scientififc Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN) give an overview of the current evidence and the adequacy of dietary intakes of iodine in the UK, following the publication of a paper in the Lancet in June 2011 by Vanderpump et al., who suggested that “the UK was iodine deficient”.

The position statement is a narrative review of the key issues and main studies rather than a full risk assessment or comprehensive review. It does not include public health recommendations but acknowledges the gaps and uncertainties in the current evidence and highlights priorities for further research surrounding the measurement, characterisation and monitoring of iodine deficiency. These include the need to examine data gathered in the National Diet and Nutrition Survey (NDNS) on the urinary iodine concentration (UIC) of the general UK population, provisionally available in 2015, before a full risk assessment on iodine and health is considered.
