At their December 2010 meeting, the CST’s discussion raised a number of issues around the spending review. The council decided to emphasise these in a letter to Professor Adrian Smith, Director General of Science and Research at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.

Issues discussed in the letter include:

  • the impact of an immigration cap on the UK’s ability to attract top researchers from around the world
  • the importance of engaging the public, so that more young people will be attracted to studying science, technology and mathematics
