The Smart Metering Implementation Programme will offer smart meters to every home and over 2 million smaller non-domestic organisations in the country by the end of 2020.

These reports present early stage findings from a research project, commissioned by BEIS, early in the non-domestic roll-out of smart meters. The research sought to understand how these organisations use energy and manage energy consumption, including how they use smart meter data.

The research used a cluster (grouping) based method, which classified non-domestic organisations by how they use energy.

The ‘overview report’ summarises the findings of the research across the clusters. Cluster-specific reports are included as annexes to this report, along with a cross-cluster report on ‘landlords and tenants’.

The last report presents the outputs from an expert workshop in March 2017. BEIS arranged this workshop to identify solutions that will help non-domestic organisations make use of their smart metering data to manage their energy better and realise the benefits of smart metering.

On 27 November 2017, BEIS launched the £8.8 million Non-Domestic Smart Energy Management Innovation Competition. The competition aims to help develop the market for products and services that use smart energy data. This will help non-domestic organisations make better use of their smart meter data to manage their energy use and reduce consumption.
