Details

The first Smart Motorway All Lane Running (SMALR) scheme opened in 2014. Since then further schemes have been opened on some of the busiest parts of the motorway network.

The purpose of this overarching evaluation is to present a wider picture of SMALR safety performance. Combining data from all the schemes provides a larger sample size, increasing the number of conclusions that can be drawn. This overarching evaluation also enables the safety performance of the individual schemes to be compared.

This report presents the results of combined safety performance of nine SMALR schemes and confirms that All Lane Running is performing as expected. It compares the safety performance the schemes against the situation before they were built and evaluates this against the SMALR objective and generic hazard log assumptions.
