Details

This code of practice gives guidance on inspecting street works including:

  • investigatory inspections and works
  • improvement plans
  • fee arrangements
  • reports
  • inspections involving coring

Inspections take place when works are:

  • in progress, making sure appropriate signs and barriers are in place to protect workers and road users
  • finished, making sure the site has been properly cleared and the road reinstated to a proper standard

The third edition of the code came into force on 1 April 2023, replacing all previous versions. It reflects:

  • the changes the government committed to implement following this consultation, in particular:

    • use performance to calculate the number of sample inspections of reinstatements carried out each year, so that poor performers are inspected more frequently
    • amend the way an inspection unit is calculated
    • consolidate the fee that needs to be paid for reinspections of reinstatements that have failed a previous inspection
