Syndromic surveillance summary: 29 August 2024 week 34

Reporting week 34: 19 August to 25 August.

During week 34 most syndromic respiratory indicator activity was decreasing or stable but within seasonally expected limits. GP in-hours COVID-19-like consultations continued to decrease while emergency department (ED) attendances stabilised. Syndromic indicators for the impact of heat were below seasonally expected levels.

During week 34 daily NHS 111 calls and online assessments for diarrhoea and vomiting decreased but in general remained above expected levels. Acute respiratory infection calls and assessments were stable and similar to baseline. Calls and online assessments for ‘heat exposure or sunburn’ and insect bites decreased and remained below seasonally expected levels.

During week 34 COVID-19-like consultations decreased while all other respiratory indicators were at seasonally expected levels. Consultations for ‘heat or sunstroke’ and insect bites decreased and were below seasonally expected levels. Measles remained stable and whooping cough decreased during week 34, but both indicators remained above expected levels.

During week 34 there was a small increase observed in acute respiratory tract infection contacts however this followed the expected seasonal trend. There was also an increase in contacts for difficulty breathing/wheeze/asthma contacts, but again this activity followed expected trend.

Emergency department syndromic surveillance system

During week 34 COVID-19-like attendances stabilised while other respiratory indicators showed a decreasing or stable trend with activity at levels similar to expected. Pneumonia attendances were stable but remained slightly above baseline. Attendances for gastroenteritis decreased and were at expected levels.

Ambulance syndromic surveillance system

During week 34 daily ambulance calls for ‘impact of heat or cold’ remained below levels expected for the time of year. Daily calls for difficulty breathing decreased and are currently at expected levels.
