Details

The smart metering Early Rollout Obligation (ERO) was announced as part of the Rollout Strategy in 2015 and introduced into legislation earlier in 2016. This obligation requires qualifying large energy suppliers to have installed and enrolled with the Data Communications Company a de-minimis number of SMETS2 meters by 17 February 2017.

Government consulted in November on removing the ERO supply licence conditions on the basis that it had largely fulfilled its purpose of driving SMETS2 metering procurements. (see the “BEIS open letter consultation on removing the Early Rollout Obligation; 16-23 November 2016” above).

We are now issuing the Government’s response to this consultation which confirms that, in the light of broad support from respondents, the ERO will now be presented to Parliament for removal.

See also the Smart Energy Code (SEC) consultation earlier in 2016 during which licence conditions were consulted on, and the Early Rollout Obligation confirmed.
