All parts of the CJS are working to: reduce crime; reduce re-offending; protect the public; provide victims with reparation; increase public confidence; and ensure that the system is fair and just.

This Strategy and Action Plan sets out this shared ambition for the CJS, and the programme of reform to be implemented over the next two years to work towards it, building on the reforms set out in the 2012 White Paper, ‘Swift and Sure Justice: The Government’s Plans for Reform of the Criminal Justice System.

The action plan sets out a number of steps to build a CJS which is:

  • digital
  • faster and right first time
  • transparent and responsive and
  • shows care and consideration for victims and witnesses

Implementing the reforms in the plan can only be achieved in partnership. It has been developed by the Criminal Justice Board, made up of senior representatives from across the CJS, who have collectively committed to its delivery.
