Overview

The British High Commission, Singapore and the British Council announce a call for proposals through the UK-SE Asia Knowledge Partnership to support the initial stages of new collaborations between UK and Southeast Asia researchers and policymakers.

Collaborative Development Awards (CDAs) are mobility grants to support the initial stages of new collaborations between UK and South-East Asian researchers and policymakers. The aim of the Awards is to catalyse research collaborations through new joint project development and access to research funds.

Key Outcomes of Collaborative Development Awards

Collaborations funded in the 2013/14 round resulted in joint proposals for a comparative study on governance models; a 3 year study on ‘Healthy Ageing’; production of patents; seminars in ‘natural product discovery’ or advanced material characterisation; further experimentation of malaria parasites. In addition to reciprocal visits being arranged, there was also the signing of three Memorandum of Understandings.

The Awards were mobility funds to cover travel, subsistence, and accommodation for one researcher or policymaker to travel between the UK and SE Asia to a maximum value of £2000.

Collaborative Development Awards 2014/2015

Collaborative Development Awards 2014/2015 are similarly for the creation of sound research collaborations between partners in South-East Asia and the UK. Awards are available to support the following activities:

  • SE Asia-based researchers or policymakers visiting the UK, or UK-based researchers or policymakers visiting SE Asia to explore and define areas for future research collaborations

  • Short secondments to a potential partner’s research laboratory in Southeast Asia or the UK to evaluate the viability of joint projects or to develop new project proposals The Awards are to support travel and subsistence from SE Asia to the UK or vice versa.

Requests for funding can be made to spend time in either region, visiting one or more laboratories to identify opportunities for collaboration or to discuss specific projects with universities or companies. Visits should be a minimum of 10 days with a clear visit plan agreed between the researcher and the host/s organisation. CDAs do not fund actual research activity.

The value of each award is £2,000 (pounds sterling) and will be awarded to one person per application. Costs that can be claimed as part of the award include:

  • Economy class flights

  • Local travel

  • Visa fees

  • Accommodation

  • Meals

  • Telephone costs

No other costs can be included.

Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam will have separate calls for proposals through the British Council’s Researcher Links Programme.

Only researchers and policymakers that have not received a CDA in the past may apply. Extensions to previous year’s CDAs will not be possible.

All applications must be in made in English and the application form must be fully completed.

Assessment of Application

A review panel will assess each application using the following selection criteria:

  • complementarity of the experience/expertise of the two teams

  • relevance of the topic to UK research priorities

  • two-way knowledge transfer

  • potential for international research with impact

  • value for money
