PHE’s Health and Justice Team, in its role as the UK Collaborating Centre to the WHO Health in Prison Programme (UKCC WHO HIPP), co-produced an international conference with the WHO Europe Regional Office (Copenhagen) and the State Penitentiary Service of Kyrgyz Republic (GSIN).

The conference was in the capital city, Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, in October 2015.

The aim of the conference was:

  • to share good practice internationally
  • to improve the quality of prison healthcare, with a focus on reducing harm from illicit drug use among people in prison, including infectious diseases transmitted by sharing injecting equipment

The 3-day programme included:

  • a day of prison visits
  • an international conference
  • a regional consultation event which included discussion on research, tuberculosis in prisons and peer health education
