Details

This report summarises research by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), conducted to gain a better understanding of employers views and behaviours on Automatic Enrolment (AE) and Defined Contribution (DC) Pension Schemes.

Research background

The purpose of this research was to explore the role employers play in supporting their employees to save into their pension or emergency savings, to understand how employers view pensions within the overall benefits package, and why they may contribute above the minimum amounts required under Automatic Enrolment. The research was also conducted to explore employers views of Automatic Enrolment following the pandemic, and help inform decisions on future Automatic Enrolment contributions and coverage.

Contribution to the evidence base

This research complements our evidence base on workplace pensions by providing an insight into the employers views and behaviours. More information on workplace pension participation and contribution from the employees’ perspective can be found in the Workplace pension participation and savings trends of eligible employees: 2009 to 2021 publication.

Research value

This research is used to inform a range of policy activities including:

  • the implementation strategy for the 2017 AE Review Measures
  • a consultation and subsequent Impact Assessment regarding the future of AE
  • the annual statutory review of AE Thresholds
  • development of other policy areas such as pensions engagement
