Details
The lookup tables have been produced to ease the use of the 2011 Rural Urban Classification in further analyses. Each lookup table consists of a spreadsheet with the full list of areas for each geography and both of the accompanying detailed and simple 2011 Rural Urban Classification.
The Classification for small area geographies is derived from the 2011 Rural Urban Classification and is available for:
- Census Output Areas (2011)
- Census Lower Super Output Areas (2011)
- Census Middle Super Output Areas (2011)
- Census Wards (2011)
The Classification for local authority areas is derived from the 2011 Local Authority Rural Urban Classification and is available for:
- Local Authority District Areas (2011)
- Local Authority District Areas (2013)
- Local Authority District Areas (2019)
- Local Authority District Areas (2020)
- Local Authority District Areas (2021)
The Classification for higher level geographies is also derived from the 2011 Local Authority Rural Urban Classification and is available for:
- Counties and Unitary Authorities (2021)
- Westminster Parliamentary Constituencies (2020)
- NUTS level 3 areas (2018)
- NUTS level 2 areas (2018)
- Fire and Rescue Authorities (2021)
- Community Safety Partnerships (2020)
- Police Force Areas (2020)
- NHS Sub-Integrated Care Boards (2022)
- NHS Sustainability Transformation Partnerships (2021)

Multiple versions of the Rural Urban Classification exist for some geographies due to boundary changes over time. Where this is the case the most recent classification is listed, while classifications using the older boundaries can be made available on request.
