The latest provisional monthly energy production, consumption and prices statistics produced by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.
Documents
Details
Energy production and consumption statistics are provided in total and by fuel and provide an analysis of the latest 3 months data compared to the same period a year earlier. Energy price statistics cover domestic price indices, prices of road fuels and petroleum products and comparisons of international road fuel prices.
Energy production and consumption
Highlights for the 3 month period February 2020 to April 2020, compared to the same period a year earlier include:
- Primary energy consumption in the UK on a fuel input basis fell by 6.5% with a noticeable reduction in petroleum consumption as demand for transport fuels fell due to the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown from 23 March 2020; sales of the three key transport fuels petrol, diesel and aviation fuel were all at record low levels in April 2020. On a temperature adjusted basis consumption fell by 7.9%. (table ET 1.2) and (table ET 3.13)
- Indigenous energy production fell by 0.7%, with rises in gas, bioenergy, wind, solar and hydro output but falls in output from coal, oil and nuclear. (table ET 1.1)
- Electricity generation by Major Power Producers down 5.9%, with coal up 26% but gas down 27%, and renewables up by 25% due to record monthly levels from wind in February 2020 and solar in April 2020. * (table ET 5.4)
- Renewables provided 43.7% of electricity generation by Major Power Producers, with gas at 35.1%, nuclear at 17.6% and coal at 2.8%. * (table ET 5.4)
- Low carbon share of electricity generation by Major Power Producers up 9.0 percentage points to a record 3 month high of 61.3%, whilst fossil fuel share of electricity generation stood at a record 3 month low of 38.1%.* (table ET 5.4)
*Major Power Producers (MPPs) data published monthly, all generating companies data published quarterly.
Energy prices
Highlights for June 2020 compared to May 2020:
- Petrol prices up 1.6 pence per litre on month, whilst diesel prices up 0.9 pence per litre, as the price of crude oil recovers. (table QEP 4.1.1)
