Documents
Details
Energy production and consumption statistics are provided in total and by fuel and provide an analysis of the latest 3 months data compared to the same period a year earlier. Energy price statistics cover domestic price indices, prices of road fuels and petroleum products and comparisons of international road fuel prices.
Energy production and consumption
Highlights for the 3 month period May 2021 to July 2021, compared to the same period a year earlier include:
- Primary energy consumption in the UK on a fuel input basis rose by 19%, with petroleum consumption increasing month on month since February 2021 as lockdown restrictions have been lifted. On a temperature adjusted basis consumption rose by 12%. (table ET 1.2) and (table ET 3.13)
- Indigenous energy production fell by 26% to a record 21st century 3 monthly low level, due to maintenance activities and less favourable weather conditions for renewable technologies. (table ET 1.1)
- Electricity generation by Major Power Producers up 2.3%, with coal up sharply in July 2021 and gas up 20% in the last 3 months to meet shortfall from renewables down 16% due to less favourable weather conditions and nuclear down 6.9% due to outages.* (table ET 5.4)
- Gas provided 48.2% of electricity generation by Major Power Producers, with renewables at 30.4%, nuclear at 18.7% and coal at 1.8%.* (table ET 5.4)
- Low carbon share of electricity generation by Major Power Producers down 8.6 percentage points to 49.1%, whilst fossil fuel share of electricity generation stood at 50.3%.* (table ET 5.4)
*Major Power Producers (MPPs) data published monthly, all generating companies data published quarterly.
Energy prices
Highlights for September 2021 compared to August 2021:
- Petrol prices up 0.1 pence per litre, whilst diesel prices down 0.1 pence per litre.(table QEP 4.1.1)
