Erratum notice

Some inaccuracies in the data had come to light in our publication ‘Enquiries about results for GCSE and A Level: Summer 2014’ exam series. The inaccuracies were due to some errors in the data provided by an exam board.

This affected:

  • the report and tables contained within the report: including references and commentary about qualification grade changes
  • table 2 to table 8 in the appendix of the report as well as in the separate Excel file

The corrected version of the data has been reported in the revised summer 2015 exam series release of the publication on 31 March 2016. We apologise for any confusion caused as a result.

Main findings:

  • Changes to qualifications in summer 2014 meant a greater volume of exams were taken compared to recent years with entries up 11% on 2013
  • The number of individual enquiries rose by 48%, from 304,400 last summer, to 451,000 in summer 2014 relating to 414,850 qualification results, a 26% increase on 2013 when 329,750 results were challenged
  • In total, 77,400 qualification grades were changed, up from 54,400 in 2013 which is less than 1% of all grades issued and 18.7% of all grades challenged
  • The higher volume of enquiries meant that turnaround times by exam boards were slightly longer, although still within agreed timescales
