Details

The main trends for entries and late entries for GCSE, AS and A level for 2018 to 2019 academic year in England were:

  1. The total number of GCSE entries has increased slightly by 0.4% with just under 13.8 million total GCSE entries in 2018/19 and just over 13.7 million in 2017/18.
  2. The total number of AS and A level entries has decreased by 10% from just under 2.8 million in 2017/18 to 2.5 million entries in 2018/19. Total AS level entries have decreased by 48.1% from 458,135 to 237,855 and total A level entries have decreased by 2.5% from just over 2.3 million to just under 2.3 million.
  3. The number of late GCSE entries has decreased by 15.2% from 573,350 to 486,385, which represents a decrease in proportion from 4.2% of total entries in 2017/18 to 3.5% of total GCSE entries in 2018/19.
  4. The number of late AS and A level entries has decreased by 32.6% from 75,830 to 51,115, which represents a slight decrease in proportion from 2.7% of total entries in 2017/18 to 2.0% of total AS and A level entries in 2018/19.
  5. The number of GCSE certificates awarded has increased slightly by 1.6%, with just over 5.3 million awarded in 2018/19 and just over 5.2 million GCSE certificates awarded in academic year 2017/18.
  6. The number of AS and A level certificates awarded has decreased by 16.2%, with 869,805 AS and A level certificates awarded in academic year 2018/19 and just over 1 million awarded in 2017/18. This is mainly due to the decoupling of AS and A levels. The number of AS level certificates has decreased by 56% from 273,950 to 120,520 and the number of A level certificates has decreased by 2% from 763,735 to 749,285.
