Key headlines for academic year 2022 to 2023
This report presents statistics on the number of entries, late entries and certifications for GCSE, AS and A level for the November 2022 series and June 2023 series, and historical data going back to 2019.
The key headlines for entries and late entries for GCSE, AS and A level for the 2022 to 2023 academic year in England are:
- The number of GCSE certificates awarded has increased by 3.4%, with 5.4 million awarded in 2022 to 2023 compared to 5.2 million awarded in the 2021 to 2022 academic year.
- The number of AS and A level certificates awarded is broadly stable and has increased by less than 0.1% from 855,335 in 2021 to 2022 to 855,700 in 2022 to 2023.
- The total number of GCSE component-level entries is broadly stable and has increased by 0.3% with just under 14.6 million GCSE entries in 2021 to 2022 and just over 14.6 million in 2022 to 2023.
- The total number of AS and A level component-level entries has increased by 3.1% from 2.5 million entries in 2021 to 2022 to 2.6 million entries in 2022 to 2023.
- The number of late GCSE entries has decreased by 10.2% from 236,015 to 211,975. This represents a decrease from 1.6% of total entries in 2021 to 2022 to 1.4% of total entries in 2022 to 2023.
- The number of late AS and A level entries has decreased by 53.5% from 56,225 to 26,160. This represents a decrease from 2.2% of total entries in 2021 to 2022 to 1.0% of total entries in 2022 to 2023.
Please note, the 2021 to 2022 academic year GCSE figures include an autumn series in addition to the routine November and June series. For AS and A levels, the 2021 to 2022 academic year figures also include an autumn series in addition to the routine June series.
