Details

The latest fire and rescue operational statistics for England for 2010 to 2011 were released under the auspices of the UK Statistics Authority on Wednesday 24 August 2011.

The main points from the release are:

Numbers of staff

  • at 31 March 2011, there were 29,100 wholetime firefighter full-time equivalents (down 2% on 2010), and 12,100 retained firefighter units of 24-hour cover (up 2% on 2010)
  • there has been a gradual increase in the representation of women and minority ethnic staff in recent years: at 31 March 2011, 4.1% of firefighters were women compared with 2.8% in 2006; minority ethnic staff accounted for 3.7% of all staff (include both uniformed and support staff) compared with 3.0% in 2006

Health and safety

  • there were 3,500 reported injuries to fire fighters in 2010 to 2011, 48% lower than in 2000 to 2001

Community fire safety

  • 825,000 home fire safety checks were carried out by fire and rescue services and their partners in 2010 to 2011, slightly lower than the record number of 840,000 carried out in 2009 to 2010

Fire safety audits of buildings

  • fire and rescue services carried out 84,600 audits of buildings in 2010 to 2011, 7% more than in 2009 to 2010; almost 90% of follow-up actions were informal notifications
