This release on Thursday 19 December 2019 includes tables and a statistical release with analysis for journey times on the public transport network, for cycling and for car journeys for 2017. Tables for public transport and cycling were previously published on Wednesday 27 November 2019, and this release includes the car journeys tables and brings it all together in the statistical publication.

Statistics on journey times to key services in England, by public transport, cycling and car.

In 2017, the average minimum journey time to access a range of 8 key local services from where people live was:

  • 18 mins using public transport and walking
  • 15 minutes by cycle
  • 11 minutes by car

These times were unchanged from 2016.

For public transport and walking in 2017, these were:

  • 15 minutes in urban areas
  • 30 minutes in rural areas

In 2016 these times were:

  • 15 minutes in urban areas
  • 29 minutes in rural areas
