Details
The release on 30 August 2012 included statistics on walking, as well as cycling. This update only updates the statistics on cycling. This is due to changes in the survey questions for walking, for which a full year of new data is not yet available.
The statistics are based on results from the Active People Survey (APS), an annual household telephone survey administered by Sport England.
During the year ending October 2012:
- 10% of adults in England cycled at least once per week. 3% of adults cycled at least 5 times per week
- the prevalence of cycling in England has not changed significantly compared to the same period for the previous year
- across different local authorities, the proportion of adults cycling at least once per week ranges from 47% (in Cambridge) to lower than 5% in other areas
- of the 326 local authorities in England, there are six in which at least a fifth of adults cycle at least once per week
According to the 2011 Census:
- around 2% of adults in England usually travel to work by bicycle, with the highest proportion being in Cambridge (18%)
