Details

The latest national statistics on the provisional outturn figures of local authority capital expenditure and receipts in the financial year April 2009 to March 2010 and forecast figures for April 2010 to March 2011 was released on 29 June 2010 under arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

The latest statistics release includes data from 2005-06 to 2010-11 and updates those statistics previously released on 18 June 2009 and 1 July 2009.

The main points from this release are:

  • capital expenditure by local authorities in England rose to £21.7 billion in 2009 to 2010, a year-on-year increase of 10% and is forecast to rise to £24.4 billion in 2010 to 2011, a year-on-year increase of 13%
  • capital receipts fell again in 2009 to 2010 to £1.2 billion but are forecast to rise back to £1.4 billion in 2010 to 2011
  • the largest percentage increase in capital expenditure in 2009 to 2010 is in transport (27%); this increase primarily relates to the Greater London Authority’s contribution to the Crossrail project; education accounts for 26% of capital expenditure
