This release includes statistics relating to checks and challenges under the new Check Challenge Appeal (CCA) system used for the 2017 rating list in England.

This release also contains statistics on challenges against, and changes made to, the 2010 rating lists for England and Wales and challenges against the 2017 rating list for Wales only up to 31 March 2020. Statistics on reviews of (changes to) the 2017 rating list for England and Wales are also included.

These statistics will be expanded in future releases depending on user needs, and data availability and quality. There will be an update of the full publication in August 2020.

The key highlights from the official statistics are that, as at 31 March 2020, the VOA had:

  • Registered 158,910 checks under the Check, Challenge, Appeal (CCA) system. 21,550 of these were in the last quarter
  • Registered 31,920 challenges under the Check, Challenge, Appeal (CCA) system. 5,240 of these were in the last quarter

In addition:

  • 150,480 checks and 12,200 challenges have been resolved. 2,160 challenges have also been marked as incomplete
  • In the last quarter, 20,690 checks and 2,500 challenges have been resolved

  • 143,610 Interested Persons (IPs) and 12,650 Agents had registered to use the check and challenge service
  • We have approved 390,090 property claims by businesses

The key highlights are that, for Wales, as at 31 March 2020 the VOA had:

  • Received 950 challenges in the last quarter, with 1,050 challenges being resolved in the same period. 7,530 remain outstanding.
