The statistical first release contains information on the percentages of 16-, 17- and 18-year-olds in education and training and those who are not in education, employment or training (NEET) for end 2008 (revising provisional figures released last year) and end 2009 (provisional). Key breakdowns are by age, gender, mode of study, type of learning, institution type (further education college, schools, etc.), labour market status and highest qualification being studied.
SFR 18/2010 was issued on 22 June 2010. This SFR contained errors. The provisional figures on the number of 17-year-olds in sixth form colleges and further education colleges at end 2009 were incorrect. The number was overstated by around 15,000 or 2.2% of the cohort of 17-year-olds, and this affected the number and percentage of 17-year-olds in education and training, and the number and percentage of 17-year-olds NEET, also the corresponding numbers and percentages of 16- to 18-year-olds. SFR 18/2010 was re-issued on 17 March 2011 with corrected provisional figures in place of the errors.

- Additional tables showing national time series data running from 1985 to 2009, summarising some of the breakdowns presented in the main SFR document. Users should note that these data benefit from updated population estimates for England. For this reason the population figures for 2008 and 2009 in these additional tables will differ from those in the main reissued SFR.
- Additional tables showing participation in education and training for 16- and 17-year-olds for end 2009 by local authority and region. These include breakdowns by age, mode and institution type and a time series back to 1994.
