30 November: We have updated all breakdowns by disability status in our annual publications. Quarterly data tables have been updated to clarify exactly what the data represents, i.e. respondents who said ‘yes’ when asked the question ‘Do you have any physical or mental health conditions or illnesses lasting or expected to last 12 months or more?’. Please see here for further details
The Participation Survey has run since October 2021 and is the key evidence source on engagement for DCMS. It is a continuous push-to-web household survey of adults aged 16 and over in England.
The Participation Survey provides reliable estimates of physical and digital engagement with the arts, heritage, museums & galleries, and libraries, as well as engagement with tourism, major events, digital sectors, and live sports.

30 November - We have updated all breakdowns by disability status in our annual publications to align with the Government Statistical Service harmonised standard. We have not revised the data in our quarterly datasets. Instead, we changed the way we have labelled the data to 'long lasting health condition or illness’. The actual data has not changed but the label makes it clearer that the data represents respondents who had said yes to having any physical or mental health conditions or illnesses lasting or expected to last for 12 months or more. Please note this is a different measure to ‘disabled/non-disabled’, which are available in the annual data tables. For further information, please see the update on the Participation Survey website. This can be found on our 2022/23 annual publication page.
