Provisional estimates of road traffic, by:

  • vehicle type
  • road class

in Great Britain for the year ending December 2016.

Provisional estimates show that motor vehicle traffic was at a record high of 320.5 billion vehicle miles. This is 1.2% higher than the previous year, and 2% higher than the pre-recession peak level in 2007.

Compared the year ending December 2015, we see that:

  • car traffic increased by 0.7% to a record 249.5 billion vehicle miles
  • van traffic rose 3.4% to a new peak of 48.5 billion vehicle miles
  • HGV traffic rose by 2.8% overall, reaching record levels on motorways
  • traffic on motorways and ‘A’ roads increased, but was broadly stable on minor roads
