Statistics on the number of local bus:

  • passenger journeys
  • fares

in Great Britain.

For the year ending June 2020, the number of local bus passenger journeys in:

  • England was 3.25 billion, a 24.7% decrease
  • London decreased by 24.7%
  • England outside London decreased by 24.7%

When comparing local bus passenger journeys for April to June 2020 to April to June 2019, we see:

  • a 82.5% decrease in England
  • London decreased by 80.2%
  • England outside London decreased by 84.8%
  • Scotland decreased by 85.0%
  • Wales decreased by 87.1%

The local bus fares index increased by 1.9% in England between June 2019 and June 2020.

For other areas, the local bus fares index change was a:

  • 0.0% increase in London
  • 2.5% increase in metropolitan areas
  • 3.5% increase in non-metropolitan areas
  • 2.8% in Scotland
  • 1.7% in Wales

The Consumer Prices Index (CPI) increased by 1.1% over the same 12-month period.

This publication covers April to June 2020, which coincides with the application of movement restrictions due to coronavirus (COVID-19) in Great Britain. The collection of passenger data is not granular enough to distinguish numbers of passenger journeys before and after changes in the restrictions.
