Details
Passenger journey figures are based on data collected from a panel survey of the largest bus operators and are seasonally adjusted. The bus fares index is compiled from data provided by a representative sample of operators.
The annual bus finance tables on operator revenue and government support to the bus industry have also been updated for year ending March 2014. This follows the publication of the revenue outturn figures by Department for Communities and Local Government on 28 November 2014.
Passenger journeys
In the year to September 2014:
- an estimated 4.71 billion bus passenger journeys were made in England, around 87 million more than during the previous year
- passenger journeys in London increased by 2.6%, while outside London bus use increased 1.2% compared to the year to September 2013
Comparing July to September 2014 with July to September 2013:
- there was a 0.2% increase in bus passenger journeys in England with a 0.9% increase in London and a 0.6% decrease outside London
- bus passenger journeys also decreased in Wales and Scotland over the same period
Bus fares index
Comparing September 2014 with September 2013, there was an increase in bus fares of 3.1% in England (3.1% in London, 2.5% in metropolitan areas and 3.5% in non-metropolitan areas). The all items retail prices index increased by 2.3% over this period. Over the same period there was an increase of 2.3% in fares in Scotland and 3.6% in Wales.
Bus finance statistics
In the year ending March 2014, annual bus operator revenue is estimated to be around £5.6 billion, of which 58% is from fare receipts. Net government support for buses was an estimated £2.2 billion, down 19% from the financial year ending 2009 peak in real terms.
