This release includes information on:

  • the number of schools and pupils
  • tables showing the number of pupils by:
    • age
    • gender
    • free school meal eligibility
    • ethnicity
    • first language
    • gifted and talented status
    • mode of travel

It also includes a range of class size information.

The information was originally published using provisional data on 13 May 2010. This provisional information has now been updated with tables produced from final data (17 June 2010). Additional data on pupils’ mode of travel and on the numbers of pupils in alternative provision (AP) and pupil referral units (PRUs) has also been included for the first time.

The main points from this release are:

  • in January 2010 there were around 8.1 million pupils (headcount) in all schools in England
  • in maintained nursery, primary, state-funded secondary and special schools overall the proportion of pupils known to be eligible for free school meals increased
  • in both maintained primary and state-funded secondary schools the proportion of pupils classified as being of minority ethnic origin increased
  • in both maintained primary and state-funded secondary schools the proportion of pupils whose first language was believed to be other than English increased
  • in both maintained primary and state-funded secondary schools the number of pupils identified as gifted and talented increased
  • the percentage of pupils with Statements of SEN remained constant, while the percentage of SEN pupils without a statement increased
  • the average size of key stage 1 classes taught by one teacher increased slightly, while the average size of key stage 2 classes taught by one teacher remained constant
  • the average size of classes taught by one teacher in maintained primary schools increased slightly, while the average size of classes taught by one teacher in state-funded secondary schools decreased slightly
  • in 2010 the most common mode of travel in maintained primary schools and state-funded secondary schools was walking. For special schools the most common mode of travel was by bus
  • in 2010 there were 13,240 pupils in pupil referral units
  • in 2010 there were 22,510 pupils in alternative provision
