Details

Estimates for the number of UK seafarers active at sea, including demographic analysis. The release covers some statistics on non UK seafarers who are qualified to work on UK registered vessels. Updated annually and reflect numbers as at the end of June 2015.

In 2015:

  • the total number of UK seafarers active at sea was estimated to be 23,380, an increase of 2% compared to 2014
  • there were 10,930 certificated officers active at sea, a similar level to 2014, while the number of uncertificated officers increased by 4%, to 1,710
  • the number of UK ratings increased by 5% (compared to 2014) to 8,830, the first increase since 2011
  • there were 820 new entrants under the SMarT1 scheme, a 4% increase on the previous year

User engagement exercise

Department for Transport is currently undertaking a methodology review of the seafarer statistics series.

Through this review, we aim to:

  • consult informally with users and stakeholders to determine their requirements
  • review the publication’s existing methodology
  • determine potential alternative data sources and methodologies
  • investigate their feasibility and accuracy
  • assess and compare each option
  • determine the most suitable options for future publications
