About
The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) sponsors 15 national museums which provide free entry to their permanent collections. The data for this release are collected by the museums through sample surveys, with the exception of the information on educational visits and total visits, which are based on actual counts.

Revision
Amendment on 27 January 2020: Minor amendments have been made to the Tyne and Wear historic visitor figures for 2008/09 to 2014/15. These revisions have been marked in red in the associated tables and all other figures remain as previously published. The chart showing the Total number of visits to DCMS-sponsored museums and galleries 2002/03 to 2018/19 and Figure 2 showing the Total number of visits to the DCMS-sponsored museums and galleries, 2008/09 to 2018/19 in the statistical release have also been updated to reflect the minor amendments made to the historic data for the years 2008/09 to 2014/15.
