The previous version of this report (Transport and environment statistics: 2023) incorrectly included both domestic and international air pollutant emissions in the total for the calculation of the proportion of domestic air pollutants deriving from transport. This has been resolved in the current report, increasing the percentage of pollutants from transport in the headline figures. This correction to the calculation should not be interpreted as a significant increase in the percentage of air pollutants deriving from transport between 2021 and 2022. The correct estimates for the entire backseries can be found in table ENV0301.
In 2022, UK domestic transport accounted for:
- 113.2 MtCO2e, an increase of 2% compared to 2021 and a decrease of 10% compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019
- 28% of domestic GHG emissions
- 49% of domestic NOx emissions
- 22% of domestic PM2.5 emissions
- 18% of domestic PM10 emissions
Previous releases of the transport and environment statistics report included comparisons of journey emissions, for example journeys by different transport modes. This information is available in the journey emissions interactive data tool. Note that the current version of the tool covers emissions estimates for 2023 and was last updated in October 2023. An update to this tool is expected in 2025. The methodology for this analysis can be found on the transport energy and environment statistics information page.
The Department for Transport previously published a tool to compare carbon dioxide emissions from transport by local authority. The most recent data is available from the National Atmospheric Emissions Inventory Local Authority GHG Map tool.
