Some of the local ‘A’ road estimates presented in this release have been revised. Please see our February publication for updated figures and further details.

The main impact is to the local ‘A’ road morning peak figures for January and February 2017. Estimates for the Strategic Road Network are unaffected.

Average delay and average speed statistics for local ‘A’ roads (managed by local highway authorities) in England, for April 2016 to March 2017.

The average delay is estimated to be 46.0 seconds per vehicle per mile when compared to free flow. This represents an increase of 2.7% compared to the year ending March 2016.

The average speed was 25.2mph. This is a 1.0% decrease on the year ending March 2016.

Average speeds have decreased steadily since the start of this series in 2014. Typically, these decreases have been greater on urban classified roads than on rural roads. However, in the recent quarter (January to March 2017), the decrease has been greater on rural roads.
