Key points
- UK sea ports handled 512 million tonnes of freight traffic in 2010, an increase of 2% on 2009, but 12% lower than in the peak year of 2005.
- Traffic on UK domestic waters accounted for 6% (110 million tonnes) of all goods lifted in the UK, and 22% (49 billion tonne-km) of all goods moved (2009 figures).
- In 2010, there were 23.5 million international sea passenger journeys to and from the UK, up just under half a million on 2009. Dover was the busiest passenger seaport, handling 60% of international sea passengers.
