Details

This statistical release contains data on the proportion of:

  • new Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) claimants placed in the support group by mental health or other health condition, (27 October 2008 to 31 March 2014)

  • initial Work Capability Assessments (initial claims only) that resulted in a support group decision by age, (1 January 2009 to 31 December 2013)

  • the ESA caseload where claimants had previously claimed Disability Living Allowance at the start of their ESA claim by age

  • ESA claims assessed where claimants were placed in the support group, work-related activity group or found fit for work, split whether cancer is the main disabling condition, (1 November 2008 to 31 July 2014)

The Work Capability Assessment assesses to what extent an ESA claimant’s illness or disability affects their ability to work.

ESA claimants are placed in the support group when they’re found to have limited capability for work and work-related activity. They’re not expected to undertake work-related activity although adviser support is available to them if they wish to use it.

ESA claimants are placed in the work-related activity group when they’re found to have limited capability for work. They’re not expected to work but are expected to undertake work-related activity to prepare to enter or return to work in the short to medium term.

This publication supports the Government response to the Work Capability Assessment independent review year 5, published on 27 February 2015.
