Become a fleet driver trainer

How to join the voluntary register of fleet driver trainers, including eligibility, how to apply, renewing your registration, fees and standards checks.

You can apply to join the voluntary register of fleet driver trainers if you specialise in training fully qualified drivers of fleets of cars and vans.

You must be an approved driving instructor to join the register.

When you’ve qualified and joined the register:

  • your details will be given to people looking for fleet driver training
  • you can advertise yourself as a ‘Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency registered fleet driver trainer’

Your registration as a fleet driver trainer will last for 4 years.

Take a training course to qualify

You have to take a training course accredited by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) to qualify as a fleet driver trainer.

You must join the register within one year of completing the course.

Before you start

You need:

  • your online user ID from DVSA
  • your password
  • a debit or credit card to pay the £120 registration or renewal fee
  • details of any motoring or non-motoring offences, and disqualifications from driving
  • details of any court cases being brought against you

Your user ID and password

You can find your user ID on letters you get from DVSA. It’s not the same as your ADI personal reference number.

Request your user ID from DVSA if you do not know what it is. You’ll need your driving licence number.

Rules for passwords

You cannot use any of your 5 previously used passwords.

Your password must be at least 9 characters long. It must include at least 3 of the following:

  • uppercase characters, such as A B C
  • lowercase characters, such as a b c
  • numeric digits, such as 1 2 3
  • special characters, such as £ % &

If you’ve already done your training course

You can apply online if you’ve already done an accredited training course within the last year.

You need to email a copy of your course certificate to DVSA after you’ve applied.

Manage your registration

Your registration will last for 4 years from when you join the register.

You’re responsible for remembering when your registration runs out and renewing it.

You can renew your registration online. It costs £120.

Renew your fleet driver trainer registration

You can re-join the register without having to qualify again within 12 months of your registration running out.

Replace your fleet driver certificate if it’s lost, stolen or damaged

Email DVSA if your registration certificate is lost, stolen or destroyed.

You have to pay £3.60 for a replacement. DVSA will contact you to take the payment after you’ve emailed.
