Defence STEM engagement

Defence and its partners seek to inspire and encourage more young people to study STEM subjects and pursue STEM careers.

Defence STEM engagement

The UK is facing a national skills shortage related to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Defence is playing its part within an integrated UK approach to increase the STEM skills talent pool to meet the UK’s future demand for technical professionals: by motivating young people to pursue STEM-related careers and by building awareness of available opportunities regardless of sector.

The Armed Forces, the Defence Nuclear Organisation and two defence enabling organisations deliver a range of age-appropriate STEM activities at events, and visit schools and youth organisations. They support a thriving army of volunteers who selflessly give their time and energy as STEM ambassadors.

The Defence STEM Engagement steering group governs our strategy and is a collaboration between the Defence organisations and our UK strategic partners:

  • Engineering UK (including the Tomorrow’s Engineers campaign)
  • STEM Learning
  • Primary Engineer
  • Scottish Schools Education Research (SSERC)
  • Energy Skills Partnership (ESP-Scotland)
  • Women in Science and Engineering (WISE)

Engagement supports the national STEM effort led by the Department for Education, Education Scotland, and the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (including the Government Office for Science (goScience) and UK Research and Innovation).
