You must get approval to burn poultry manure in a combustion unit on your farm or holding.

The manure must be:

  • unprocessed
  • from your own land

Who you need to apply to depends on the output of your unit.

If your unit produces less than 5 megawatts

If your unit produces less than 5 megawatts (MW), you must apply to APHA.

You must fill in the application and inspection form (MS Word Document, 196 KB) which describes the rules you must follow, including:

  • where to put your combustion unit
  • equipment you must use
  • how to operate the unit
  • how to store manure
  • records you must keep

The maker of your combustion unit must fill in the combustion unit declaration form (MS Word Document, 81 KB) to confirm the unit meets EU standards.

If you’re in Scotland or Wales, send both forms to your local APHA field service office.

After you’ve applied

APHA will contact you to arrange a visit by a vet who will approve your operation if you’re following the rules described in the form.

If you’re approved

APHA will tell you in writing that you’re approved and send you an approval document.

After you start burning manure an inspector will visit to check you’re following the rules.
